Marco Donnarumma e Margherita Pevere
L’incidente (crash) è un momento, una collisione: ma che cosa continua a vibrare dopo quell’istante spettacolare in cui la realtà viene contorta, perforata, trasformata? Il crash è sempre immediato, oppure è possibile pensare a crash che avvengono su temporalità estese, come le derive tettoniche — o persino l’attuale crisi ambientale? E che cosa avviene dopo il crash, come si ricompone il tessuto della realtà? Lə artistə Margherita Pevere e Marco Donnarumma rispondono al tema generale del workshop attingendo a due concetti sviluppati nella loro pratica artistica: le “arti della vulnerabilità” e la “configurazione umano-macchina”. Da prospettive diverse, entrambi concepiscono i corpi (umani, più-che-umani, macchinici) come radicalmente aperti, permeabili, vulnerabili e in continua (ri)configurazione. Il crash come stato permanente di divenire. Il workshop si articola attraverso sessioni discorsive, pratiche e di movimento, guidate dallə due artistə in giorni separati. Le sessioni condotte da Pevere affronteranno l’idea di ecosistemi e corpi come entità in uno scambio continuo e poroso, in un crash che avviene su una scala temporale più-che-umana. Lə partecipantə rifletteranno e sperimenteranno sulla propria esperienza incarnata come vulnerabile tanto alla biotecnologia quanto alle ecologie in trasformazione. Come fare arte a partire da queste premesse? Dopotutto, le arti della vulnerabilità intendono “le arti” come un modo di fare le cose, una competenza che si può acquisire, uno strumento artistico ed etico per affrontare i crash del presente. La sessione condotta da Donnarumma considererà il crash come possibilità di emergere di nuove forme di incarnazione, con e senza tecnologia. Lə partecipantə saranno invitatə non solo a speculare, ma anche a sperimentare direttamente pratiche che permettano di abitare forme corporee alternative, tentando di far “collidere” la normatività del corpo. Sarà un crash collettivo della percezione volto a decostruire il mito del corpo “normale” al fine di muoversi verso nuove modalità di configurazione con gli altri, intrecciandosi in costellazioni di desideri e sensazioni. A tal fine, le tecnologie sviluppate da Donnarumma saranno offerte non tanto come strumenti, quanto come mezzi di percezione, organi alternativi di un divenire condiviso.
ENG The crash is a moment a collision, yet what keeps vibrating after the spectacular moment when reality is contorted, pierced, altered? Is the crash always immediate, or is it possible to contemplate crashes that happen with extended temporalities like tectonic drifts – or even the current environmental crisis? What comes after the crash, how is the fabric of reality rearranged? Artists Margherita Pevere and Marco Donnarumma respond to the overarching workshop theme by drawing on two concepts they have developed in their artistic practice: ‘arts of vulnerability’ and ‘human-machine configuration’. From different perspectives, they both understand bodies (human, more-than-human, machinic) as radically open, leaky, vulnerable, and in ongoing (re)configuration. The crash as a permanent state of becoming. The workshop is articulated though discursive, practical and movement sessions led by the two artists on separate days. The sessions led by Pevere will engage with the idea of ecosystems and bodies as entities in a continuous, porous exchange, in a crash that happens in a more-than-human timescale. Participants will reflect and experiment on their embodied experience as vulnerable to biotechnology as much as to changing ecologies. How to make art starting from these premises? After all, arts of vulnerability invokes ‘arts’ as a way of doing things, a skill that can be acquired, an artistic and ethical tool to deal with the crashes of the present times. The session led by Donnarumma will contemplate the crash as the possibility of emergence of new forms of embodiment, with and without technology. Participants will be invited not only to speculate but to directly experiment with bodily practices that allow them to inhabit alternative bodily forms, attempting to crash bodily normativity. It will be a collective crash of perception aimed at deconstructing the myth of the ‘normal’ body in order to move towards modalities of configuring oneself with others, becoming enmeshed in constellations of desires and sensations. To that end, custom technologies developed by Donnarumma will be offered not much as tools, but as means of perception, alternative organs of shared becoming.
Margherita Pevere, conosciuta per il suo lavoro “ultraterreno” con la materia vivente, l’ecologia e la biotecnologia, Margherita Pevere è un’artista e ricercatrice che affronta tabù come la morte, il sesso e la vulnerabilità. La sua pratica include performance, installazione e scrittura. Il suo progetto Lament on wildfire ecologies ha ricevuto la menzione COAL Prize Transformative Territories nel 2024. Le sue opere sono state presentate, tra gli altri, presso Ars Electronica (AT); iMAL (BE); Foundation L’Art Pur (KSA); Kersnikova (SI); Kiasma Theatre (FI); KONTEJNER (HR); Münchner Kammerspiele (DE); Volkstheater Wien (AT); Wiener Festwochen (AT). Con Marco Donnarumma dirige il gruppo performativo Fronte Vacuo. Dottoressa in ricerca artistica all’Aalto University, è ricercatrice affiliata presso The Eco- and Bioart Lab e membro del comitato scientifico del corso di dottorato in New Media and Critical-Curatorial Practices presso l’Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino. Le sue pubblicazioni trattano di estetica, environmental humanities e studi queer femministi.
Marco Donnarumma è artista, regista teatrale, inventore e teorico. La sua opera mette in discussione le politiche normative del corpo attraverso narrazioni alternative radicali, in cui i corpi si trovano in tensione tra controllo e autonomia, presenza e assenza, grazia e mostruosità. È noto soprattutto per la creazione di “body-machines” che utilizzano suono, AI, biosensori e robotica per trasformare il corpo in un luogo di resistenza e trasformazione. Con Margherita Pevere dirige il gruppo performativo Fronte Vacuo. Ha presentato il proprio lavoro in trentotto Paesi tra Asia, Europa e Americhe ed è destinatario di numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui l’Artist of the Science Year 2018 del Ministero Federale Tedesco per l’Istruzione e la Ricerca, l’Award of Distinction in Sound Art del Prix Ars Electronica 2017 e una borsa Hyundai ZER01NE Creator nel 2024. Donnarumma è stato definito dal quotidiano nazionale austriaco Der Standard un pioniere delle arti performative con tecnologie avanzate. I suoi scritti sono stati pubblicati, tra gli altri, sulle riviste specialistiche Frontiers in Computer Science, Computer Music Journal e Performance Research.

He is best known for creating body-machines that use sound, AI, biosensors, and robotics to turn the body into a site of resistance and transformation. With Margherita Pevere he runs the performance group Fronte Vacuo. He has presented his work in thirty-eight countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas and is the recipient of numerous accolades, most notably the German Federal Ministry of Research. and Education’s Artist of the Science Year 2018, the Prix Ars Electronica’s Award of Distinction in Sound Art 2017, and a Hyundai ZER01NE Creator grant in 2024. Donnarumma was named a pioneer of performing arts with advanced technologies by the Austrian national newspaper Der Standard. His writings are published in Frontiers in Computer Science, Computer Music Journal. and Performance Research, among others.
